United States Northern Command, the authority for forces within the continental United States, placed two battalions, that’s 1,500 members of the 11th Airborne Division, on alert for deployment.
Rumors have it that this highly specialized Arctic warfare force, capable of parachuting into the icy lands near the North Pole, would be sent to Minnesota to help quell unrest. They are stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska.
This is just a form of strategic deception.
They are being prepared for an invasion of Greenland.
I warned about this eventuality over a year ago: if this specific unit was placed on alert for a rapid-mobilization operation, it would parachute into the three major airports in Greenland.
The alert and mobilization of the 11th Airborne are unambiguous intelligence indicators of war. It's entirely possible they could be sent to Minnesota, but given that this state has 13,000 National Guard soldiers who live there year-round in its cold environment, it's sort of a joke.
Additionally, bringing this force down to the continental 48 states allows it to be deployed without crossing Canadian airspace.
Alternatively, this could be a feint: the unit is mobilized, boards its aircraft with parachutes, flies over the North Pole, descends from the north to take the largest airport in the country at Kangerlussuaq, seizes Nuuka airport in the capital, and finally takes the strategic airport in Narsarsuq in the south.
From Kangerlussauq, it would be the hub of the follow-on force, including armored vehicles from those divisions, the Arctic Striker Brigade.
Additionally, if we're hearing about this, it's likely that Special Forces units are already training and preparing to spearhead this operation.
How soon could they launch an invasion? As I wrote in my last assessment, we would have days’ notice if this unit were mobilized. Right now, they are on alert, which means they are in the planning stages for when to get equipment and ammunition, and for being prepared to carry out a mobilization. We shall see in the coming days.
