The most dangerous part of my trip was landing at John F. Kennedy airport and getting off the airplane into the dystopian America run by MAGA.

When I let the jetway onto Terminal Eight’s Arrivals, I had to consider that I was now in an unknown nation, as belligerent to all the values I had learned as an American as the Soviet Union or Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.

As I stepped off the Finnair flight from Helsinki to New York City, my biggest worry was not the bottle of Greenlandic gin I was carrying. I had bigger problems, and before I headed home, I prepared to confront them. For almost 2 days in Copenhagen, I reviewed the security protocols that I had been given back when I was an actual operating intelligence operative. At the Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape School, we ran the program on how to deal with hostile tyrannical communist governments, lawless warlords, terrorists, extremist interrogators, and even the news media. Surviving them was not the highest priority; they were not catching it in the first place, but just in case there were rules, protocols, and guidelines to follow.

Crossing the border of a hostile government will generally present three possibilities of how it will play out.
