The Washington Post article states that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth ordered the commanding admiral of the US Special Operations task force to sink small boats to not only attack vessels suspected of smuggling drugs, but to “kill them all“ when survivors were seen in the water. These are clearly war crimes because the Geneva Convention says armed conflicts start when one side attacks, even if the other side doesn’t recognize it.
However, an essential part of the article has been misstated. SEAL Team 6 is NOT the force carrying out armed attacks on boats from the air or sea. That was done by a US Air Force AC-130J Ghostrider gunship firing Hellfire missiles or laser-guided rockets.
