Way back in the last decade of the 20th century, I was a young sailor assigned to the National Security Agency (NSA) at Fort George G. Meade in Maryland. It was a time when the NSA was still a very little-known organization outside of the Beltway. Even with the publication of James Bamford’s “Puzzle Palace” virtually no one in America knew what was happening inside the complex much less who was working there. And it was considered an honor to be assigned to NSA.
Throughout my assignment, I conducted, some highly secretive activities at “The Fort”, as it is known to insiders. However, quite a bit of that activity involved Joint or Allied operations with other nations known as the “Five Eyes” intelligence agencies. Some missions were interagency operations, and others were international operations, but they were all compartmented and required deep special access clearances.
